Hello all.

My two problems are:

Internet Explorer won't work properly - in that, if I click to go online, it
loads up IE, showing just the 'back' and 'forward' buttons, the main address
bar, the 'refresh' and 'stop' buttons, and the google searchbox. It also
either very briefly loads up a webpage and shuts itself off, or doesn't load
anything, then shuts itself off. So far, I have only received one error
message:
IEXPLORER.EXE - Application Error - The instruction at "0x28f2f57b"
referenced, memory at "0x28f2f57b". The memory could not be "read".

I tried to follow a solution to this problem via the official microsoft
support site, and that's when I discovered the second problem:

Internet Options (on the Control Panel) won't open. The icon's there but
when I click it, nothing happens.

This happened on my parent's laptop, which is:
Packard Bell EasyNote
Intel Pentium M processor 1.40 GHz
496 MB of RAM

Running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Internet Explorer 7

I've tried updating IE to 8 but that causes the laptop to crash... I also
don't have XP on disk. Any help would be extremely appreciated!

I'm running Windows XP with SP3 and all current updates. Suddenly, my Windows

However, something in my registry has become corrupted, and there are no

Thanks in advance.

I have two different systems running Windows XP Pro. Both of them are
connected to the internet 24/7.

One of them creates a checkpoint named "System Checkpoint" almost every
day. Usually there is a checkpoint named "Software Distribution Service
3.0" on Sunday, instead.

The other one rarely creates a checkpoint named "System Checkpoint" but
every once in awhile it randomly does.

What registry keys control this? I would like this second machine to
create a checkpoint more often than it does. Thanks!

We start with a computer with two primary partitions. Each of them hold a running WinXP installation.

The BootSelector at startup retrieves the information about ALL, existing, available WinXP systems
ALWAYS from the BOOT.INI file from the first primary partition.

The user can then select from which partiton he wants to boot which WInXP. Fine.

Now lets assume the first primary partition gets corrupted or even accidentially formatted.

The computer boots now. Where does he get the information about the still working WinXP on the
second primary partition when the BOOT.INI on the first primary partition is NOT available any more?

I'm getting a 30-60s delay launching almost any program (from Command Prompt,
Notepad, through any Office 2007 application), but only the FIRST time that
particular program is launched during a given session (not sure exactly what
"session" means yet). The Windows Task Manager shows CPU usage is 99% by
System Idle Process during this delay (but I can't do much else while I
wait), so I have no idea what's causing the holdup. Any suggestions to track
it down?

Some possibly relevant details: Lenovo T61 (Core2 Duo) running XP SP2 with
all other current security updates (plus Windows Search 4.0 but minus SP3,
which Lenovo warns against). ZoneAlarm Security Suite 8.0.298.035. A bunch
(but not all) of the Lenovo garbage has been uninstalled. Various other
tweeks that don't seem relevant...

Hello. Just this past weekend my laptop hung up while I was installing
steam. I don't believe steam is the culprit. The entire computer froze
and I had to hard reboot. When I hard rebooted, the windows boot screen
came up that says windows did not load properly etc. I tried to boot
normally and it gets to the windows load bar and hangs indefinitely
(eventually I just let it do this thinking it might eventually load... 6
hours later it is still on the load bar going around and around). I
restart, try to boot in safe mode (all 3 different choices), last known
configuration, etc. All of them have the same problem, either hanging up
at the windows load bar or after all the drivers load for safe mode.

I got my xp restore disc and booted from that to just reformat the
thing, but the same thing happens when setup gets to "Setup is loading
Windows... please wait" it just hangs indefinitely. I tried holding f8
while the computer loads up and booting from the multiple options there,
but all ending in the same result. That's about as far as my expertise
on this sort of thing goes, I've even tried multiple different boot cds.
(It is a genuine version of windows professional, not bootleg, I'm not
sure if that makes a difference.)

I do not have a floppy drive on this laptop so I cannot boot from winxp
floppies.

Help! Thanks in advance.

piece of paper travelling to the file folder--no status bar, no
destination file name, no nothing--and it stays that way indefinitely.
I've tried everything Yahoo has suggested (unclick Enable 3rd party
browsers, delete cookies &
cache and even disabling my auto-protect) to no avail. I've even tried
saving instead of opening, with the same results. Help! Please keep in
mind that I can follow instructions in English, not in computer-

Have a HP laserwriter 5M printer here connected to a PC using
a usb-to-parallel cable. This setup has worked fine for the entire
last year even under heavy printing. A month ago the memory in the
computer was upgraded. Two weeks later we began to see an interesting
problem: if you print files one at a time, it works fine. But if you
print a bunch of jobs together, it will print pages with
stuff like

Error: undefined

OFFENDING COMMAND: 923

Stack: 2397

which probably means it is just garbage the PS processor in the
printer is trying to make sense out of. I connected the said printer
to my ubuntu laptop and just could not replicate the error, so I am
guessing the printer is ok. I also checked the Events and Errors page
in windows and saw there were a lot of events with ID 6004 around the
time these events happened; from what I understood, there might be a
driver issue or something like that. AFAIK, it has the latest XP
drivers for the said printer. Can anyone confirm my findings or,
perhaps offer more suggestions?

When using Windows Explorer to copy and/or move files, I find it very
annoying that when I drag the file icon from the present location in the
right pane to the desired new location in the left pane, as the icon
approaches the desired location in the left pane the contents of the
left pane starts moving, either left-right or up-down. This occasionally
causes me to drop the icon in the wrong location, and it always slows
down the process of positioning it in the right location. Is there a
setting somewhere that will prevent the contents of the left pane from
moving around like this? If so, are there any possible negative
consequences? (This is a Windows XP Pro SP3 system.) Thanks!
